Photos: Make Music Day in Columbia SC
If you passed through Five Points in Columbia yesterday you may have seen Joe Robinson celebrating Make Music Day walking around on stilts with a guitar amp strapped to his back. But due to it's short performance, you probably missed Adam Cullum using a handful of rocks and the fountain as an instrument to perform Dean Rosenthal's Stones/Water/Time/Breath.
“It’s kind of an experimental music-theater piece. The national organizers reached out to us about having someone perform it last year but we didn't have anyone who was interested. I believe Adam actually stumbled upon the information on his own and decided to perform the piece.” explains local event organizer Ashleigh Lancaster.
“I didn't know what to expect but it was weird and fun and awesome. I won't lie, it's slightly above my head, but you can read more about the piece here: http://www.stonespiece.com/
Last year over 750 cities worldwide participated in the all day summer solstice musical celebration that dates back to 1982 and some Parisian dude who wanted to bring folks out into the streets. It brought ukulele player Jessica Skinner (below) to a park on Main with families interested in learning how to play different instruments. "Tim Hall invited me to lead the ukulele portion of the day," the local musician explains, "The idea was that people around the city/world would be making music at the same exact time. I taught the group a few basic chords and led them in a few songs."
