First Week: Duck Donuts [photos]
Some of my earliest memories from childhood involve eating donuts in the Australian Outback. My family had moved from Maryland to Alice Springs - a small town in the middle of the continent. At that time the world was concerned about dingoes eating little people like me and Midnight Oil and Men at Work were creating relevant music. My dad worked third shift at the NSA base and often picked up donuts on the way home from work. Outside of Captain Crunch and that time I found an ant biting my wiener in the back yard, it's one of few memories I have from mornings in Australia.
But it seemed as though every day started with donuts - outside of that morning with the ant. And it was magic.
And for many donut fans, yesterday in Columbia, SC was magical. Krispy Kreme offered their 80 cent dozen special that snarled traffic around the donut factories with a fetish for glaze and the line was out the door at the recently opened Duck Donuts, located across from Whole Foods Market. A crowd of more than 40 mingled and explored the process behind made to order donuts hailing from the Outer Banks.
