Sipping on Capri Sun backstage at Girls Rock (Photos)
While I overheard one comment that the green room wasn’t even green, I saw no other dissatisfaction from anyone backstage at yesterday’s Girls Rock showcase. But maybe it was the bowl of Jelly Beans filled with what appeared to be all the flavors and ten packs of Capri Sun that made the band members quickly forget. Whatever the reasoning, they were getting ready to go on stage in the same green room at Columbia’s Music Farm, as used by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Jason Isbell and Ani DiFranco. Vanilla Ice, Sevendust and Riff Raff.
Celebrating their fifth year in Columbia, organizers marked the conclusion of the five day mentoring program with 71 campers in 14 bands performing 14 songs. Sixteen if you count the group encore, highlighted with some words from Mollie Williamson, the departing executive director and founding organizer who walked off the stage with hundreds in attenance chanting, "MOLLIE!!! MOLLIE!!! MOLLIE!!!
"I really wanna say thank you to all of you for believing in us and trusting us. You know, it's such an honor and such a privilege to have the trust of our community and all of you parents. And most of all the youth here, to teach them how to rock. Thank you so much for giving me this transformative experience and changing my life.”
