It was day three of my flood coverage when the sun came back out. I woke up early and photographed the attempts to repair the breach in the Columbia Canal and then headed out of town. The day before, I had split my time between South Beltline and Lake Katherine and was really interested to see what things looked like out in the country. After looking at the rainfall totals and the direction that the water would move toward the Atlantic, I decided to head out towards Eastover. The tiny South Carolina town is just north of the Congaree National Forest, affectionately referred to as "The Swamp" by Columbia locals. It's gorgeous out there.
Trey McMillian was out exploring the roads he typically drives near Eastover on October 6 when we met where the road ended. We shared stories from the previous two days and talked about where we'd seen more roads that had been washed out in the area. Eventually I walked away to make some photos of Trey surveying the damage. A rather large fish (or some other animal) made a big splash and to my surprise he tried to get a really good look. Last week, that photo has appeared in two year in review collections that feature a lot of really amazing photojournalism from 2015. Check them out.

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders is opening two more field offices in South Carolina on Thursday. The new offices in Anderson and Rock Hill will add to four other field offices the campaign opened earlier this year in Charleston, Columbia, Florence and Greenville, Sanders’ campaign said.

“The media promptly wants to blame [the Planned Parenthood shooter] on the pro-life movement when at this point there’s very little evidence to indicate that,” Senator Cruz told reporters in Iowa Sunday. “It’s also been reported that he was registered as an independent and a woman and a transgendered leftist activist. If that’s what he is, I don’t think it’s fair to blame on the rhetoric on the left.”
