I've always been a fan of the Olympia neighborhood on the edge of Williams Brice Stadium in Columbia, SC. The strange dichotomy of it's inhabitants and architecture with it's geographically themed street names suggests its a place where people actually live. It's got culture. And it's got a really big hole that humans have been digging in since 1880. Today, the Vulcan Materials Company processes an average of 10,000 tons of rock a day from the location, which is now home to the annual Vulcan Quarry Crusher Run.

Last weekend, event organizers hired me to photograph the 3.72 mile race that leads participants 400 feet below sea level and then back up out of the massive hole through a series of cutbacks built for trucks larger than a lot of houses in the neighborhood. The scale is awe inspiring. As a quarry employee chauffeured me through the grounds on an electric golf cart I pretended I was in the original Planet of the Apes.
