Ending an Era - Final Regular Season Game at Capital City Stadium

“The bassoon is one of my favorite instruments. It has a medieval aroma, like the days when everything used to sound like that. Some people crave baseball...I find this unfathomable, but I can easily understand why a person could get excited about playing the bassoon.” - Frank Zappa

Capital City Stadium - located on the edge of the Olympia neighborhood - has been home to baseball since 1927. Soon the land will be home to a shopping center, offering another location for Soda Citizens to pick up their milk and eggs. The Bombers - a collegiate summer league team - will move out to a new stadium in Lexington and in 2016 Columbia will get a minor league team in the brand new facilities at the former Bull Street mental health property. Last night, the Blowfish defeated the High Point - Thomasville HiToms in the final regular season game at the stadium. Allow these fun quotes surrounding baseball to narrate the end of an era.

"Sure I eat what I advertise. Sure I eat Wheaties for breakfast. A good bowl of Wheaties with bourbon can't be beat." - Dizzy Dean (Cardinals/Cubs 1930-41)

“But baseball was different. Schwartz thought of it as Homeric - not a scrum but a series of isolated contests. Batter versus pitcher, fielder versus ball. You couldn't storm around, snorting and slapping people, the way Schwartz did while playing football. You stood and waited and tried to still your mind. When your moment came, you had to be ready, because if you fucked up, everyone would know whose fault it was. What other sport not only kept a stat as cruel as the error but posted it on the scoreboard for everyone to see?”
― Chad Harbach, The Art of Fielding

"If you know how to cheat, start now."--Baltimore manager Earl Weaver, to pitcher Ross Grimsley on the mound.

"Any pitcher who deliberately throws at a batter's head is a Communist." -Alvin Dark, manager, San Francisco Giants.

"On this special Fathers Day, we'd like to wish all of you a very Happy Birthday." - New York Mets announcer Ralph Kiner

"I can remember a sports writer asking me for a quote and I didn't know what a quote was. I thought it was some kind of soft drink." - Joe DiMaggio

"I was in Little League. I was on first-base - I stole third base. I ran straight across the diamond. Earlier in the week, I learned the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. I argued with the umpire that second base was out of my way." - Steve Wright (Red Sox 2013-present)
