One hundred and fifty years ago today General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered the shelling of Columbia, South Carolina. Just blocks from my home on the banks of the Congaree River near the Gervais St. Bridge Union troops lobbed cannon balls at the statehouse and other targets on the east side of the river. Rebel forces fought back from the opposing banks. The following morning Yankee troops crossed the river and Columbia Mayor Thomas J. Goodwyn surrendered the state capital that gave birth to the Confederacy and the war itself. Twenty four hours later - much of the city would be burned. On Saturday, reenactors assembled for their annual gathering recounting the assault on the city.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the "wildin' out" and the most significant day in the history of the Soda City, folks will gather downtown tomorrow outside of the Columbia Museum of Art at 5pm.
