Photos: Lake Murray Fourth of July Boat Parade
Adorned with a few American flags and some streamers, a single boat passed by a few families who had gathered yesterday on the Irmo side of the Lake Murray Dam for a Fourth of July boat parade. The captain sounded a steam whistle and a few white puffs escaped to join the clouds above. “I hope that’s not the only boat,” said one woman sitting in a folding chair.
And unfortunately for her and those who gathered on the Irmo side the renegade vessel would be the only boat they saw celebrating the holiday parade. Launched from Bomb Island, the route strutted past the Lexington side of the dam, turned left at the beach and continued along the dam towards Irmo for another left at the towers and back to Bomb Island. A website insinuated that both parks were good locations for spectators and park staff was not equipped with information.
Dressed in particularly patriotic attire, Dwayne Schumpert walked several times across the dam and then scrambled to watch the parade make their turn back to the island. Despite being a veteran of most midlands celebrations, it was his first experience with the parade. “I started at the Irmo side of the dam, over to the Lexington side of the dam and back over to the Irmo side and then when I realized the parade wasn't coming all the way over to this side [I went] back halfway across again,” he said, “Not a short walk by any means. I was definitely a person of interest for the buzzards that were flying over there. Betting that [I] wouldn't make it.” Learn about photojournalism from South Carolina photojournalist Sean Rayford
