A show at the Elbow Room was my alibi on two occasions in 1998. The first instance occurred when my neighbors in Preston dormitory saved up their pee for a week, storing it in to-go cups from the Grand Marketplace. One of the perps was an individual from abroad who had already served in the military and they built a contraption that allowed the conspirators to hang the pee cups on their neighbor’s door, and when someone opened the door from the inside, the cups would tip over and send the payload into the dorm room. One of them knocked on the door and snuck out their window across the hall. I happened to have walked in the door right after this. I had nothing to do with that and have not seen that culprit in more than 15 years.

The other time that the Elbow Room became my alibi that year was when one of my suite mates discarded computer components out the third floor study room window, as an "art installment" that included the results of baby powder a giant stencil that read “FUCK,” used repeatedly the length of the hallway. It was finals week. I had nothing to do with that either, but yesterday I ran into the culprit for the first time in many years, while he and his wife navigated a stroller with a hellion through a mud pit at City Roots. They’ve recently moved to Columbia after time in the Low Country.

“I’m teaching him to be a terrorist too,” said the stencil man before we returned to our vehicles.
